Sitting Still
I spend a lot of my time now-a-days sitting still. Sitting with quiet. I've gotten very good at being still, being quiet. I work midnights. I hang out in an office by myself for 8 hours. Sometimes I don't speak the whole night and when 7:45 a.m. rolls around and I see my co-worker walk in the door, my voice startles me. I like being quiet, I like being still.
Working midnights has been interesting. I kinda like being out late and heading into work wide awake at 11:45 p.m. while most of the world is heading to bed. All the stop lights are yellow when I'm going to work and there's no traffic. When I wake up most are pulling in their driveways after a long day's work; we seem to have that same dazed look on our faces whether just waking up or just getting home. It can also be down right lonely and isolating.
I have a whole new love for email, it's how I talk with most of my friends. Plus they seem to love to wake up to their emails in the morning, finding the odd websites I have fwd'd them throughout the night...I've got a lot of time on my hands and the web is a vast and strange place.
Back to the still/quiet thing.
I want to take a chair into the woods, park it, and sit. Sit for about a half hour or so. Just sit and be still. The sounds and the movements that would come out I bet would be amazing. This post was partly inspired by sitting quietly in this office and watching a baby centipede make its way around an electrical plug. Ahhhhh the critters that come out at night.
